Solar Battery Storage

Integrating a solar battery into your solar panel system ensures that you capitalise on 100% of the energy that you produce and gives you the option to sell back to the grid.

We know how much solar panel installations costs, so if you have any questions for our expert installers, we will be more than happy to help you.

Benefits of investing in solar batteries

Solar batteries are designed to capture the surplus solar energy usually exported to the grid, storing it for use later in the day, to save you from buying in electricity when the sun isn’t shining. They can be easily added to an existing solar panel system with minimal disruption.

How does a solar battery work?

A solar battery works by converting the DC energy being produced by your solar panels and storing it as AC power for later use. When you install a solar battery as part of your solar panel system, you are able to store excess solar electricity at your home instead of sending it back to the grid.

During the day:

  • The solar panel system generates solar electricity.
  • The battery storage system will check if all the generation is being used to power your lights and appliances.
  • If you’re not using all the electricity, any surplus energy is used to charge the battery.
  • Once the battery is fully charged, if there is still more solar electricity being generated, this will be exported to the grid.
  • Excess energy can be sold back to the grid under the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG)

In the evening or at times of low solar generation:

  • The solar panels have a reduced output.
  • If your demand is greater than the electricity generated from your solar panels, it can be diverted from your battery. This ensures that you are making full use of the solar power that you have captured.

Frequently Asked Questions

The answer depends on a number of factors:

  1. The size of your existing solar panel system and how much electricity you generate.
  2. How much of the generated electricity you export back to the grid throughout the day.
  3. The size of the battery system.

The solar batteries have an approximate lifespan of 10-15 years depending on the manufacturer.

Yes, we can simply swap the old battery with a new battery with minimal disruption.

Yes, the battery system can be easily retrofitted onto existing systems without any disruption to the solar panel generation.

Yes, the stored energy can be used to provide electricity to a whole range of appliances.

The Fox ESS batteries are 2.6kwh per battery and  you can install  up to 7 batteries in a domestic property, meaning you can have up to 18.2KWH of storage.

The Tesla Powerwall is a 13.5kwh battery AC couple system. You can ‘stack’ up to 6 of these together.

The Tesla can charge and discharge at 3.6kw or 5kw depending on what grid code has been applied for.

The AC and DC coupled ‘stacked’ system will charge and discharge dependent or the grid code applied for on the installation and the battery/hybrid inverter size. Most common and hassle free is to charge and discharge at 3.6kw rate max.

Yes they can. The Tesla powerwall comes with the back up capability already activated due to the installation of the gateway. With the other systems we install we will need to know if back up is required as adjustments will need to be made to the circuit layout in the property. You have to be careful that the back up loads do not exceed the battery discharge capabilities
